Some Time Long Ago

Some time long ago,
Birds lined the telephone wires,
And sweaters kept us warm.
Cream buns and apple cake; luxurious snacks,
Brigades and Commercials felt like home.

A school bus pass meant freedom,
Tazos and Trump cards filled our pockets.
Archie’s and Tinkle passed from hand to hand,
Petty shops where stories waited.
Guavas and mangoes; every season had its share,

National Market gave us brands we dreamed of.
Strummed every guitar at Reynolds.
Cassettes and CDs were collected.
Missed calls carried love in silence.
We caught up face to face.

Now, it’s both better and worse.
We are growing,
Growing weary.
The years pass,
And time gathers in our bones.
