why I killed a butterfly!

I saw a butterfly fresh out of its cocoon in my butterfly breed box with crooked wings. I kept him in the sun and he started walking but he couldn’t fly. I left him alone hoping his wings will stretch out eventually but even after a few hours he couldn’t fly. I left him on the window sill of my kitchen. After a few minutes I noticed him missing hoping he flew away, I went out and checked. He lay there, helpless without any hope to fly. An opportunistic ant was trying to tug him to its hole. I don’t think he deserved such slow death of suffering. So I killed him. It was quick. I felt miserable. What would you do?
